Lower Colorado River Authority

Texas public authority since 1934 managing the lower Colorado River, water supply for 1.4m people, dams, power generation and transmission, flood control and parks.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) is a Texas public entity created by the Texas Legislature in 1934. It manages water resources, power generation and transmission, flood control and parks across Central Texas, with responsibility for the lower 600 miles of the Colorado River and a water supply serving more than 1.4 million people.

LCRA's technical operations span several domains: dam operations and hydroelectric power generation, power plant operations, electric transmission and distribution, water resource management and water quality protection, flood control, and parks and recreation management. The organisation operates dams that combine flood control protection with recreation, runs power plants and maintains transmission lines to deliver energy, and manages parks as part of its community service remit.

The authority describes its culture as grounded in service, safety and collaboration, with emphasis on integrity, taking ownership, initiative and respect. It reports extensive learning and development programmes and a stated commitment to developing employees alongside its physical infrastructure. Its mission is framed around responsible stewardship of water and energy resources and improving quality of life for Texans.
