University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Tennessee's public, statewide academic health science system: six colleges across four campuses training health professionals and conducting research and clinical care.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is Tennessee's only public, statewide academic health science system. It educates health care professionals, conducts research and provides clinical care across six colleges and four campuses, in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville. UTHSC describes itself as the largest educator of health care professionals in the state.

Its colleges cover the main branches of health education: the College of Dentistry, the College of Graduate Health Sciences, the College of Health Professions, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy. The College of Nursing trains the largest number of doctorally prepared nurses in Tennessee. UTHSC also reports training 75 percent of the state's dentists and 34 percent of its pharmacists.

The institution's work spans higher education, clinical care and medical and health sciences research, with an emphasis on translating research into improvements in patient care. It maintains external partnerships with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, Regional One Health and the VA Medical Center. UTHSC states that its mission rests on inclusive education, research and compassionate clinical care, and that collaboration across colleges and campuses is central to how it operates.
