Aurora builds the Aurora Driver, a self-driving system for freight-hauling trucks combining proprietary lidar hardware and Verifiable AI software, with commercial hauling operations in Texas.
Aurora builds the Aurora Driver, a self-driving system designed to operate freight-hauling trucks. The system combines proprietary hardware with what the company calls Verifiable AI software, and is engineered as an independent platform that integrates with multiple vehicle manufacturers and transportation networks rather than being tied to a single automaker. Aurora is a public company, listed on Nasdaq as AUR, with headquarters in Pittsburgh and offices across the United States.
The Aurora Driver perceives in all directions and is built to make split-second decisions and operate nearly round the clock. Its sensing suite includes FirstLight, a proprietary lidar designed for long-range object detection that can identify objects more than 450 metres away. The company states that the system detects and reacts to hazards 11 seconds sooner than human drivers at highway speeds.
Aurora is currently hauling customer loads in Texas and counts seven named industry partners: Volvo Trucks, PACCAR, FedEx, Uber Freight, Werner, Schneider and Ryder. Its work spans autonomous driving systems, lidar hardware, perception and object detection, and sensor fusion for 360-degree coverage.
The team is composed of engineers, safety experts and operators, with safety described as the foundation of the company's engineering. Aurora's stated aim is to build a system that behaves like the best truck drivers on the road and to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely and broadly.
