SWACO
SWACO is central Ohio's public solid-waste authority, operating the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill, two transfer stations, and recycling, hazardous-waste and organics programmes.
SWACO is the solid-waste authority for central Ohio, responsible for planning, regulation and disposal services across Franklin County and neighbouring areas. Created in 1989 under Ohio House Bill 592 and governed by a nine-member board, it owns and operates the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill in Grove City, Ohio, along with two transfer stations. Its operational core - heavy equipment working landfill and transfer-station sites on a daily disposal cycle - is where much of the technical work sits.
Alongside disposal, SWACO runs a Recycling Convenience Center, resident drop-off programmes, household hazardous waste and pharmaceutical disposal, and support for recycling in multifamily housing. It also works with businesses through recycling toolkits, funds waste-reduction efforts through grants, and runs school and composting programmes. The Central Ohio Food Waste Initiative addresses regional food-waste reduction and diversion.
The authority's stated objective is to manage waste safely while reducing the volume sent to landfill, promoting reuse and recycling over disposal. Its programmes serve residents, businesses, schools and community organisations, with an emphasis on reduce, reuse, recycle, compost and proper disposal. Headquarters are in Grove City, Ohio; more information is available at swaco.org.
