A strong diesel mechanic resume is usually short, opens with a brief summary, and lists your licenses and certifications near the top. Diagnostic work is worth featuring early, since diagnosis, diagnostics, or troubleshooting shows up in about 9 in 10 diesel mechanic job listings.

The example and suggestions below come from what diesel job listings ask for and from resume advice published by a diesel school and an equipment dealer. Treat them as a starting point you can adjust to your own experience.

What Should a Diesel Mechanic Resume Include?

Resume guides from a diesel school, an equipment dealer, and a resume site generally include these six parts. The heavy equipment dealer RDO Equipment lists certifications ahead of work history in its resume tips. That order helps a manager who is checking for a license or CDL.

  1. Header - Your name, the job title you want, your city, phone, and email.
  2. Summary - Two or three sentences on your years of experience, the trucks you work on, and the repairs you do best.
  3. Licenses and Certifications - Your driver's license or CDL, the ASE tests you passed, and your EPA refrigerant certification if you work on truck A/C.
  4. Skills - The systems and tools you know best. RDO suggests 5 to 10 relevant skills.
  5. Experience - Each job with the employer, dates, and lines on the work you did, with numbers where you have them.
  6. Training - Your school program, apprenticeship, or manufacturer classes.

Guides differ on length. Universal Technical Institute suggests keeping it to one page, while RDO says one to two pages works.

Here is an example of a diesel mechanic resume. The words in orange are the skill words diesel mechanic job listings use most.

Sample one page diesel technician resume with a header, a two sentence summary, licenses and certifications, six skills, two jobs with results, and training. The skill words diesel mechanic job listings use most are highlighted in orange (diagnose, troubleshoot, electrical, brakes, hydraulic, and preventive maintenance)

Numbers can make an experience line stronger. "Diagnose and repair engine and electrical faults on a fleet of 40 tractors" tells a shop more than "Responsible for truck repairs."

What Keywords Should a Diesel Mechanic Resume Include?

It helps to use the words from the job listing when they describe work you have actually done. RDO notes that some hiring systems scan resumes for those keywords. The skill words that come up most in diesel mechanic job listings are diagnose or troubleshoot, electrical, brakes, hydraulic, and preventive maintenance.

A driver's license comes up in about 2 in 3 listings. It is worth listing even if you do not have a CDL.

The sample above works those words into real lines of work instead of a list of buzzwords. A good rule of thumb is to leave out any word you could not back up with a repair story in an interview.

If you know specific engine brands or scan tools, naming them can help. A manager looking for Cummins experience is more likely to stop on a line that says Cummins.

How Do You Write a Diesel Mechanic Resume With No Experience?

If you are new to the trade, consider leading with your training and any hands on work, then looking for listings that say trainee, apprentice, or entry level. Only a small share of listings use those words. The diesel technician trainee jobs page collects them in one place.

Your school program and the systems you worked on in the lab can go near the top. A lube tech, tire tech, or parts counter job is also worth listing, because it shows you have worked in a shop. The how to become a diesel mechanic guide covers the training paths.

Should You Put ASE and a CDL on Your Resume?

Yes, if you have them, both belong in your licenses section. Many listings that mention ASE call it preferred or let you earn it after you are hired. Not having it yet should not stop you from applying.

"Employers may require or prefer that their diesel technicians become certified," according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2026). The ASE certification guide covers which tests to consider first.

Listing your license class, and noting a clean driving record if you have one, answers a question many fleets ask. The CDL guide explains which class shops ask for.
