Most diesel mechanic interviews ask about the equipment you have worked on and how you track down a problem. Expect questions on safety, mistakes and the tools you own. Some shops add a hands on task in the bay. You will also get a chance to ask your own questions.

The questions in each section come up often in diesel interviews. Fill in each answer note with your own jobs, trucks and repairs.

What Do Diesel Shops Ask About Your Background?

Expect questions about the equipment you know, your training, your tools and why you want to leave your current job.

  1. What equipment have you worked on? Name the makes, engines and systems you know. If you are moving from trucks to construction equipment, tell them how you picked up a new system in the past.

  2. Which systems interest you most? Pick the work you enjoy. Engines, electrical and hydraulics are common answers. A real preference helps the manager put you in the right bay.

  3. What training and certifications do you have? List your school program, factory training and any ASE tests you passed. The ASE diesel certification guide explains which ASE tests diesel employers value.

  4. What tools do you own? Describe what is really in your box and ask which tools the shop supplies.

  5. Why are you leaving your current job? Give a specific reason like pay, hours or room to grow.

  6. Where do you want to be in five years? Shop lead, field service or a bigger skill set are all fair answers.

On the leaving question, never speak badly about a current or former employer. For the strengths question, "Sell yourself a little bit when this question comes up," Dustin Yoder of RDO Equipment said in 2024. Name your strongest system and give one repair that proves it. If you are new to the trade, the guide on how to become a diesel mechanic covers the training and entry jobs these questions assume you have.

What Technical Questions Should You Expect?

Expect to walk through valve adjustment, electrical testing, no start diagnosis, emissions faults and preventive maintenance one step at a time. Explain each step and why it comes in that order.

  1. How would you adjust the valves on a diesel engine? Give the steps in order. If you have not done that repair, explain how you would work through it with the service information.

  2. Why would you perform a voltage drop test? Explain how you would set up the meter on a loaded circuit and what a high reading tells you about the wiring.

  3. How do you diagnose a no start or a loss of power? Start by confirming the complaint. Then talk through your fuel, air and electrical checks before you name any part.

  4. What diagnostic software have you used? Name the programs and brands, then give one example of a fault you found with them.

  5. How do you handle an aftertreatment fault? Describe how you read codes and sensor data before you choose between a regeneration and a repair on the DPF or SCR system.

  6. Walk me through a preventive maintenance service. Cover your inspection order and how you write up what you find.

A clear process you can explain usually counts for more than a perfect answer. If a question is outside your experience, it is fair to say so and describe how you would find the answer.

How Do You Answer Safety and Mistake Questions?

The strongest answers use one real example. Tell what happened, what you did and what you changed afterward. Pull the example from a past job. If you are new, use one from school.

Two questions come up often. The first asks about a time you saw a coworker doing something unsafe. A good answer explains why it was unsafe, how you spoke up and what the safe method would have been. If you have never seen it happen, you can describe what you would do.

The second asks about a time you were not happy with your own work. A comeback is a natural example for a diesel tech. Name what you missed, how you fixed it and the check you now add to every job of that type.

Shops ask this to see whether you own a mistake. Blaming a parts supplier or a rushed service writer usually hurts your answer.

What Happens in a Hands On Shop Test?

Some employers have you do a hands on task in the bay during the interview. Keep a spare set of work clothes in your car in case the manager walks you into the shop.

Some shops add paperwork to the interview. You may get a checklist of minimum tools to circle and a sheet to rate your experience on common jobs. A truthful rating on that sheet keeps you from being handed work you have never done.

Expect the basic screening questions too. These cover a drug test, a physical, a valid license, a clean driving record and reliable transportation. Bring several printed copies of your resume. The diesel mechanic resume guide has an example you can update first.

What Should You Ask Before You Accept a Job?

Ask about pay structure, hours, tools, training, turnover and safety before you accept an offer. Start with pay structure and ask whether entry level techs start hourly or flat rate.

Notepad of seven questions to ask before accepting a diesel job: hourly or flat rate to start, how long until flat rate, any evening or weekend work, whether there is a tool program, what training is offered, how long techs stay and how the shop keeps techs safe.

Ask how long it takes to move onto flat rate as well. Under flat rate you are paid the book time for each job. A slow parts counter or a stuck diagnosis then cuts what you take home.

Ask about hours next. A tech's schedule changes by employer, industry and season. Some repair shops add evening and weekend hours. Some truck and bus shops run around the clock, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Finish with tool programs, turnover and safety. A shop that cannot give you a straight answer on safety may be a reason to keep looking. If you are still comparing first jobs, diesel technician trainee jobs show how employers describe their pay plans and tool policies.

How Should You Answer the Pay Question?

A range based on local pay data is safer than a single number. The national median for diesel technicians was about $61,800 a year in May 2025, according to the same federal data.

Pay varies by state and by employer type. The diesel mechanic salary by state guide shows the typical wage where you live. The diesel mechanic salary page shows what employers post in their listings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should You Wear to a Diesel Mechanic Interview?

Clean clothes one step above shop wear are a safe choice. A long sleeve button shirt with dress slacks and clean work boots in good shape sits at the dressy end. Clean jeans with a button shirt or a polo sits at the casual end. If you know how the shop dresses, match it.

How Do You Answer With No Shop Experience?

Use your school labs, your own truck, farm equipment or a high school shop class as examples. When the manager asks about goals, talk about the skills you want to build.

What Should You Ask at the End of the Interview?

Ask what the next steps in the hiring process are. The answer tells you when to expect a call. Show up with three to five questions and a notebook for notes.
