The DieselTechWork Team covers pay, career paths, and hiring for diesel and heavy equipment mechanics. Pay and employment figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program. Living cost comparisons come from Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price data. Statistics about job listings, such as how often listings ask for a CDL, come from listings posted on DieselTechWork.
A diesel technician and a diesel mechanic do the same job. Federal labor data counts both titles as one occupation. Many employers use the two words for the same opening. You can search both titles and train with the same program.
Truck dealers, leasing fleets, waste haulers, school districts, school bus contractors, transit agencies and city and county fleets all post openings under these titles. You can browse current diesel technician jobs and diesel mechanic jobs side by side to see the same overlap yourself.
Is a Diesel Technician the Same as a Mechanic?
Yes, the two titles describe the same occupation in every federal data set you are likely to check. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes one median wage, one job count and one outlook for diesel service technicians and mechanics. Its handbook says these workers are "also known as diesel technicians."
The national median was about $61,800 a year in May 2025. No separate figure exists for either title. The federal O*NET job profile for code 49-3031 lists Diesel Mechanic and Diesel Technician side by side among the titles workers report. You will also see Truck Mechanic, Fleet Mechanic and Service Technician on that list. A search for only one of those words misses the openings posted under the others.
How Do Real Postings Use Each Title?
The same employer often posts the same kind of role under both titles. Ryder titled one Colorado opening "Experienced Diesel Mechanic" and described it in the text as a senior level diesel technician. Penske titles its role "Diesel Technician / Mechanic II." A Republic Services posting titled Diesel Mechanic calls the job "Maintenance Technician A" in its summary.
You will see truck dealers split the same way. Rush Truck Centers posts its dealer openings as Diesel Mechanic and lists Peterbilt, International and Cummins certifications as a plus, while Kenworth Sales Company posts the same kind of dealer work as Diesel Technician. If a large fleet is on your list, the Ryder salary page shows what that employer pays before you apply.
Postings under either title ask for the same diploma, the same diagnostic skills and the same tools. The pay ranges overlap as well. Compare the pay plan, tool rules and equipment list, since the title tells you less than any of them.

Where Do the Titles Actually Differ?
City and county fleets are the one place you will see a clear pattern. City and county public works departments almost always use the Mechanic title, including Walker County in Georgia, Alexander City in Alabama and the New York City Department of Transportation. Government postings can be tied to a civil service class. The New York posting names its class "Auto Mechanic (Diesel)" and requires a civil service exam.
Those public works jobs also put you on more than trucks. The postings list snowplows, mowers, generators and fire trucks next to heavy trucks. If you want variety and a government employer, apply to city and county mechanic postings. The guide to fleet mechanic jobs covers that work in more detail.
The title does not tell you how much computer work the job involves. Alexander City's Diesel Mechanic posting asks you to diagnose engine computer and emissions systems with scan tools. One Kenworth dealer's Diesel Technician posting names no computer work.
Real job postings do not split the titles by computer work or by the size of the repairs. One Ryder Diesel Technician posting requires some major engine repair work.
Does a Diesel Technician Make More Money?
No, pay covers the same spread under both titles. Pay moved with the employer, the location and your skill level. Ryder posted $29 an hour for a Diesel Technician in Chesapeake, Virginia. It posted $48 an hour for the same title in Hayward, California.
Kenworth Sales posted a higher range for skilled techs than for entry level techs inside the same Diesel Technician opening. You can check posted pay for each title on the diesel technician salary page and the diesel mechanic salary page.
Should You Search Technician or Mechanic Jobs?
Search both titles in every area you would work, since employers pick the word on their own. Your training is the same either way. A diesel mechanic school program prepares you for openings under both titles. The guide on how to become a diesel mechanic lays out the full path.
You can ask five questions that sort jobs better than the title. Each one comes up often in diesel postings.
Item | Ask |
|---|---|
Pay plan | Hourly or flat rate? |
Tools | Own set or allowance? |
CDL | Needed at hire? |
Equipment | Trucks, buses or mixed? |
Shift | Days, nights or on call? |
You will get different answers from different employers. One mobile technician posting starts you hourly and moves you to flat rate. On flat rate you are paid a set amount per job. WM offers a quarterly tool allowance, while the Albany transit agency requires you to own your tools. Some city and school postings require a commercial license at hire or within months. The guide on whether you need a CDL as a diesel mechanic explains when it raises your options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Mechanic Apply for Technician Jobs?
Yes, you can apply with mechanic experience because no license or certificate controls either title. Employers screen on the equipment you have worked on and your years of experience. They often ask for one to five years.
Which Title Should Go on Your Resume?
Use the exact title each employer gave you so your work history matches what a past employer confirms. You can add the other word in your summary line so a search for either term finds you. The diesel mechanic resume guide shows where that line goes.
Does ASE Certification Care Which Title You Hold?
No, you earn ASE certification by passing its tests and showing work experience. Your job title plays no part. The work experience rules list one, two or three years for repair technicians. Relevant formal training can earn partial credit toward those years. The guide to ASE diesel certification covers the tests and the steps in order.
